Creating Art Like Roy Lichstenstein

Who is Roy Lichstenstein?

In the 1960's, Lichstenstein, from Manhattan, NY, became a leading figure of the new pop art movement alongside Andy Warhol. Inspired by advertisement's and comic strips, Lichtenstein's bright, graphic images brought out the best of popular culture.

Creating Art Like Lichtenstein

With a little help from our friend, we were able to reproduce drawings following the characteristics of American pop art.
We created backgrounds with bright, attractive colors and designs to give the artwork a "pop".

Once the backgrounds were created we practiced our still life drawing skills to create excused drawings.

Shading was added for a final touch with charcoal pastels and the drawings were pasted on the backgrounds for a completed pop art master piece.

What is Color Value?

Drawing a Still Life

4th Grade students were given a set up in the classroom that they then had to take pictures of with their iPads, in order to use it as a reference throughout the entirety of the project.

Their first step was to complete a realistic still life drawing, which we have been practicing for the past couple weeks.

\

After discussing values, students were given tempura paint assigning one color to each table. They used black and white to create different values.

All artists are utilizing skills involving drawing proportionally and paint mixing to create different values.

Australian Aboriginal Dot Art

How has traditional art influenced modern art?

A method of art that focuses on "Time and Patience" to tell a story.
Aborigines used natural materials from the earth to make paint and create amazing pieces of artwork with the method of dots.

How can we create dot art?
First project includes Do-A-Dot stampers

The next project we used paint and cue tips to create images; modern...

 and traditional!

Modigliani Portraits~ How is every artist unique?

Our focus the past few weeks in third grade has been the famous Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Infamous for his elongated and unique portraits.

We decided to mimic Modigliani's style and create our own  portraits using chalk pastel.

Focus for this project:
How is every artist unique?

The results were impressive!

3rd Grade Enrichment~Material Exploration

I order for artists to excel, it is important to learn about all different types of materials that can be used to create art. In our 3rd grade Enrichment Cluster we are doing just that!

For our first project we practiced drawing on aluminum foil in order to prepare us for our final project. This is unique because it is not your normal pencil and paper drawings which can help young artists learn about mixed media and explore different mediums.

The following week were able to start on our following project; making Aztec snakes from foil, Styrofoam and card stock. First we cut out our snakes from card stock.

Next, we used recycled styrofoam materials to cut out a variety of shapes and glued them onto the card stock snakes in order to create and "impression" of our design.

Afterwards, we wrapped our snaked in foil allowing the styrofoam impressions to show through so we could add color to the design.

Our final project was colorful and full of mixed media and a variety of shapes! I wish snakes really looked this friendly! Great work artists!

First Grade Music and Art Enrichment

Alongside Ms. Nelly, we have learned about several cultures in music and art during our first 1st Grade Enrichment Cluster.

Studying folk music and folk art. students enjoyed learning how to draw typical folk art pictures from the 1940's.

The following weeks, in order to celebrate Costa Rican Independence day we designed our own traditional carretas using lots of unique shapes and colors!

Our final week together, Ms. Nelly and I combined music and art movement together in one class focusing on students expressing their emotion through drawing while listening to different types of music. The children showed a wide variety of creativity! I was very impressed with the results!

5th Grade Enrichment~ Introduction to Photography

Before we all had iPads and iPhones, we used cameras!
This course has been designed to help students learn about digital photography and although iPads may be used as a resource and tool, this is a great opportunity for 5th graders to learn about basic photography skills as well as allowing them to view life through a camera lens.

Check Out the Displays!

Come and see the displays in the  art building and elementary building!!

4th Grade Enrichment Material Exploration

With new adventures upon us, enrichment courses thus far have been very successful and exciting! Fourth graders we have been experimenting with all varieties of different materials to make some very creative pieces of work.
For example, students used tempura paint to paint a landscape on aluminum foil. The results were amazing!!

The next assignment was to create a string painting, using string as the "paintbrush", then finding a type of subject within the painting. Eventhough we got a little messy, the results proved to be great works of art.

Van Gogh Oil Pastels

Fifth graders were introduced to Van Gogh's Sunflower painting:

After learning about the famous painting, students were able to create their own unique flowers using oil pastels. To complete the flowers students added beans for texture.
After students completed their flowers I displayed them by class in order to show off the beautiful colors to students and visitors! The displays are still able to been seen in the new art building, drop by anytime!

Lines in Motion

Fourth graders studying the Principles of Art have used the concept of motion to create some fantastic "Lines in Motion" artwork. After photographing each student and printing their picture, students were able to express their creativity through lines and design using crayon and watercolor to show movement and motion.
