Leaf Rubbing

First graders used the elements of line, color and texture to create leaf rubbings in their sketch books.

First Weeks of School

For the first few weeks students were able to use their creative skills in order to start creating introduction art projects including name tags and collaged self-portraits. These projects are used as an introduction to the year's art class and portfolio collection in their sketch books.

Recycled Crayons

For our leaf rubbing project, I created some new crayons using old crayons. Great idea if you have a lot of old crayons lying around and it's quick and easy! I have had a lot of students ask me how this is done so here is the process if you want to try it at home (of course with the help of a parent):

First, unwrap all the crayons. Break them into small pieces in order to fit them into the pan, this way they will also melt faster.

Next, choose what shapes you want your new crayons to be, I chose circles. You can mix and match colors in one to get some different values of colors.

Then put them in the oven on 275. They cook quickly, usually in about 5 minutes so watch them carefully. Let them cool because they will be liquid when they come out of the oven.

Once they are cooled down you can remove them from the pan and WOW! Brand new crayons!

Elements and Principles

Last week students were introduced and re-introduced to the Elements of Art. The fundamentals that will be the basis for all creations of art.

Fourth and Fifth graders were introduced to the Principles of Art in order to advance their skills and knowledge in the world of art.

New Elementary Arts Teacher

Introduction to Ms. Mali

I would like to express my gratitude for this opportunity to join the arts department at Lincoln School. I am excited to begin implementing my ideas and creativity for all elementary students in order to help each student appreciate the different methods of art and their own unique artistic abilities.

With experience teaching overseas in South Korea and in the United States, I plan to continue assisting my students in the progression of their education in the arts. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master's in Education, I have formed a strong philosophy that offers students the capability to tap into their creative abilities and utilize the arts as a form of instruction through time management, a positive attitude and new experiences.

I look forward to a great school year involving children, parents, teachers and the community. Please feel free to visit our blog for new updates, photos, and useful information on Lincoln Elementary Arts.
